The Problem

Sound Familiar?

Most overseas electricians have no clear roadmap. We’ve built one.

You're working as a labourer or in a different role — way below your skill level

You've been told you need to "re-do" your whole trade — but no one explains what that really means

You're earning $28–35/hr when Australian electricians earn $55–70/hr doing the same job

You've spent hours on government websites and still don't know what your first step is

You’re not alone. Most overseas electricians have no clear roadmap. We’ve built one and we walk you through it.

The Outcome

Here's What Getting Recognised Actually Means

$28–35/hr

Labourer / unlicensed rate

BEFORE

$55–70/hr

Licensed electrician rate

After — Recognised

The Roadmap

The Pathway to Your Australian Electrician Licence

Electricians are a licensed trade. Here’s the official recognition process — step by step.

Trades Recognition Australia evaluates your overseas qualifications and experience. Mandatory first step for all overseas electricians.

  • 4 years experience with qualification (or 6 years without)
  • 12 months worked in the trade in the last 3 years
  • Managed by TRA — federal government body
  • Outcome : Formal recognition of your overseas skills

Once your Skills Assessment is approved, you apply for a Provisional Licence in your state. You can work under supervision — and earn — while completing gap training.

Bridges the gap between your overseas training and Australian standards. Covers AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules and local requirements — not the basics you already know.

A practical assessment run by a registered RTO to confirm you meet Australian competency standards.

You receive your Certificate III in Electrotechnology and can apply for your full unrestricted electrician licence — work anywhere, independently.

OUR STORY

Built by a Tradie, for Tradies

Valentin is a French-trained electrician who went through the Australian recognition process himself — the confusion, the paperwork, the dead ends. He built Oversix so overseas electricians across Australia don’t have to figure it out alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the Skills Assessment take for electricians?

TRA typically processes applications within 3 to 6 months, depending on the completeness of your documents. Oversix helps you submit a complete application the first time to avoid delays.

Do I need to re-do my trade in Australia?

Not completely. As a licensed trade, electricians go through Gap Training (~12 months) rather than repeating a full apprenticeship. It covers Australian wiring rules and local standards — not the basics you already know.

Can I work as an electrician while going through the process? How much do your services cost?

Yes — once you have your Provisional Licence (after your Skills Assessment is approved), you can work under supervision while completing your gap training.

Do I need to be in Australia to start the Skills Assessment?

No. You can start your TRA Skills Assessment application from overseas. Many of our clients begin the process before they even arrive in Australia.

Is Skills Assessment the same as RPL?

No. Skills Assessment (via TRA) is for licensed trades like electricians — a government-required step for licensing. RPL is for non-licensed trades. If you’re an electrician, you need Skills Assessment, not RPL.
