What is a skills assessment — and do you need one?
A skills assessment is an official evaluation of your overseas qualifications and work experience against Australian standards. For most trades, it’s conducted by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA).
- Work legally in a licensed trade in Australia
- Apply for employer sponsorship (482 visa)
- Apply for a skilled migration visa (189, 190, 491)
- Get your overseas qualifications formally recognised
Your Pathway
Licensed trade or not — your pathway is different.
Not all trades work the same way in Australia. Whether your occupation is licensed determines which pathway you need — and in what order.
- Electrician · Plumber · Refrigeration & A/C
LICENSED TRADES
Regulated occupations — a state licence is mandatory to work legally.
- → Skills Assessment (TRA)
- → Provisional Licence
- → Gap Training
- → Certificate + Unrestricted Licence ✅
- Carpenter · Welder · Mechanic · and more
No mandatory licence — but a skills assessment is still required for skilled visas.
NON-LICENSED TRADES
- → Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
- → Australian Certificate
- → Skills Assessment (TRA)
- → Skilled Visa Application ✅
