Get your carpentry experience assessed for skilled migration
Experienced carpenter from overseas? We prepare and follow your TRA skills assessment, so your qualification and/or your experience count for skilled migration.
Sound familiar?
You’ve built frames, formwork and fit-outs for years. TRA needs to see it in your file.
You don’t know which TRA program applies to you.
You don’t have a formal qualification in your trade and think you can’t apply.
Your payslips, references and contracts are incomplete or in another language.
You are aiming for skilled migration but don’t know where to start.
What a skills assessment changes for you
Same skills. The difference is a TRA outcome you can use for skilled migration.
- Experience not counted for skilled migration
- Unsure which TRA program applies
- Evidence scattered across countries
- No clear visa pathway
- A TRA skills assessment outcome as a carpenter
- Your experience counted, with or without a qualification
- A file ready for your skilled migration application
- Next step: your visa, with a registered migration agent
How the skills assessment works, step by step
We prepare your file so TRA sees the full picture of your experience.
Free eligibility check
We review your trade, experience and passport, and tell you which TRA program applies to you.
Strategy call
We confirm your TRA program, your pathway, realistic timelines and next steps, in plain English (or French).
Evidence preparation
You gather proof of your employment. We give you templates, help with reference letters and review everything before it is lodged.
Assessment by TRA
Depending on your TRA program, TRA or a TRA-approved RTO assesses your documents, often with a technical interview. Under Pathway 1, there can also be a practical assessment. With an Australian qualification (Pathway 2), there is no practical assessment and the fees are much lower.
Your outcome
A successful outcome confirms your skills as a carpenter. You can then move on to your skilled migration application, with a registered migration agent.
What evidence you'll need
TRA sets what it needs for your program. Most applicants provide a mix of the following.
- Employer references describing your duties, hours and dates of employment
- Payslips, contracts or tax records for each job
- Bank statements showing your salary
- Photos of your work (useful for your assessment)
- Your qualifications, if you have any, with certified translations if needed
- Your CV and passport

Whether you’re already here working below your level, or still planning your move.
Frequently asked questions
Can I be assessed without a formal qualification?
Yes. TRA assesses your qualification and/or your paid employment, so a formal qualification is not mandatory if your experience is sufficient. If your evidence is limited, RPL for carpenters can give you an Australian qualification first.
Which TRA program is for me?
TRA has several programs. The right one depends on your profile, your occupation and your situation. We check it with you on the strategy call.
Do I need to be in Australia?
Not necessarily. Many applicants are assessed from overseas. We check the arrangements for your program and country with you.
What is Pathway 2?
Pathway 2 is for applicants who already hold a relevant Australian qualification, for example through RPL. There is no practical assessment and the RTO fees are much lower than under Pathway 1.
Is the skills assessment my visa?
No. A TRA skills assessment is one step of a skilled migration application, which is decided by the Department of Home Affairs. We are not migration agents: for visa advice, speak to a registered migration agent.
